Take Care of Your Las Vegas Landscape Throughout the Year

How to Maintain Your Las Vegas Landscape Throughout the Year

If you want the best-looking yard in Las Vegas, then you need to take care of it throughout the year. While it is essential to do some tasks all year long, there are others that you should do during a particular season.

Fall

Start by cutting the grass with the mower set to about 1.5 inches to encourage new crown growth. Then aerate the soil as it will allow the fertilizer and water to soak into the ground rather than running off. Now is the perfect time to fertilize your grass with a balanced mixture of potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus to give the grass the food it needs to go through the cold winter months. You should be reducing your watering to three days a week. Enjoy a splash of fall color by planting black-eyed Susans and snapdragons. Get a start on your spring flowers by planting bulbs, including daffodils, gladiolas, and hyacinths. Prevent water evaporation by mulching well around plants.

Winter

Once cold weather sets in, reduce your watering to one day a week. Make sure to protect sprinkler heads and hoses when freezing temperatures are expected. Bare-root trees should be planted before mid-February. This month is the perfect time to enrich your soil with compost for planting early spring flowers like snapdragons, pansies, and petunias. Feed your rose bushes and fruit trees so that they are ready to produce beautiful blooms throughout the year. The colder months may also be the perfect time for pruning trees depending on the variety.

Spring

Increase your watering to three days a week during the spring. If you are going to plant container trees like Texas mountain laurels, desert willows, and chaste trees, then get them in the ground. Spring is also the perfect time for planting desert-hardy perennials and annuals.

Summer

Adjust your water schedule as needed to help plants cope with the hot summer months. Water plants infrequently and deeply to encourage them to develop deep root systems. Mow fescue grass no shorter than 2.5 inches and Bermuda grass no shorter than 1.5 inches, changing direction each time that you mow.
