Is Overseeding Right for Your Las Vegas Lawn?

Is Overseeding Right for Your Lawn in Las Vegas?

If you want a lush yard throughout the summer months in Las Vegas, then you may need to consider overseeding your yard in the early spring. You will enjoy greener grass throughout the year, especially during the winter months. Be warned, however, that this practice should be done only after your Bermuda grass is in great shape.

Cut and Rake the Bermuda Grass

The first step is to cut the Bermuda grass to about 60 percent of its normal length. Then, give the yard a complete raking to remove the grass that you have cut. The rye seed needs to get in contact with the ground.

Seed and Feed

It is crucial that you not overseed the ryegrass or your Bermuda grass will have a hard time thriving in the spring. For most yards, you will need 7 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Spread the seed evenly on the moist ground making sure that it comes in contact with the ground as much as possible. Water in short blasts until you see germination of the ryegrass occur. Once you notice the rye seed begin to grow, feed it with a starter fertilizer. Your fertilizer choice should contain at least 0.5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. In early spring, you will need to feed it again before the Bermuda grass begins to grow.

Mowing

You should aim to keep your rye grass between two and three inches tall throughout the winter months. After the threat of the last freeze has probably past, then mow it to one inch tall. This will allow the Bermuda grass to start growing while shocking the ryegrass. Once about 50 percent of the Bermuda grass is green, then apply lawn fertilizer. You should mow the Bermuda grass the first time in the spring when it is less than 1.5 inches tall.

There are many benefits of overseeding with ryegrass. A healthy stand of ryegrass will help stop spring weeds. Therefore, once the grass is established, you can skip the fall fertilizer on your lawn. Your lawn will look beautiful all year long, and it will feel thicker to summer bare feet. If your schedule is already full, then landscaping services in Las Vegas, NV, may be the perfect solution.
