Add Beauty to Your Las Vegas Backyard With Edibles

Use Edibles to Increase the Beauty of Your Backyard

Many food crops make a beautiful addition to backyard landscaping. Growing your own food can be a wonderful way to teach children how to grow food. Additionally, it can help lower your grocery bill while making your space look beautiful. There are many options, including bountiful fruit trees, beautiful vines, and fruit-bearing shrubs.

Fruit Trees

Many types of fruit trees do well in Las Vegas’ desert climate. Apricot trees usually grow between 15 to 20 feet tall while plum trees usually are about five feet shorter. There are many choices that are self-pollinating. While nectarine and peach trees need to be pruned every year, they also do well in the high-desert climate. Homeowners that are planning to hold onto their homes may want to consider peach trees, but most will not produce until three or four years after they are planted. Some dwarf citrus trees do very well in pots, allowing owners to take them inside on the coldest of winter nights. In addition to providing food, many of these trees can also be used to help shade the house, helping to naturally lower house temperatures, which can reduce heating bills.

Vines

Many varieties of grapes grow very well in the desert. Bush beans and strawberries also do well in containers as long as they are water and fertilized well. Do not overlook the possibilities of growing vines in containers and letting them hang down towards the ground, adding a vertical dimension to your space. Sweet potatoes can also be grown, but they will need some shade. Vines can be grown on fences, gazebos, patios, and many other surfaces. They make a beautiful backdrop for many other flowers and plants.

Shrubs

There are many types of shrubs that you can use in your backyard landscaping. There are delicious varieties of blueberries, huckleberries, and raspberries that grow well in Las Vegas. These shrubs look beautiful throughout the year, putting out flowers in the spring before they mature into delicious fruit. Make sure to think about radiant heat when planting edible shrubs.

Landscape design in Las Vegas can be delicious as well as beautiful when you use edible choices. Consider adding fruit trees, vines, and shrubs to your landscaping.
