Las Vegas Spring Rose Care

As warmer temperatures arrive in your Las Vegas garden, your rose plants need a little extra care to prepare them for the coming year. Take advantage of warmer late winter and early spring days to give them the care that they need, and they will reward you with beautiful blooms.

Examine Roses for Winter Damage

When the leaves start appearing in the spring look carefully at each rose plant. All leaves and debris should be raked from under the plant. Unhealthy leaves should be trimmed away. Ensure that they are not pinched off as this can create an opening for pathogens to enter your plant. Some rose buds will not open properly if Las Vegas gets a large amount of spring rain, so then buds need to be clipped off so that the plant will put on new ones sooner.

Apply New Mulch

A new layer of mulch should be put around roses in the spring. This helps give them needed nutrients while helping to control weeds. One to two inches should be placed around the rose plant with more being added where the stem comes through the ground.

Pay Special Care to Climbing Roses

If you have climbing roses, then spring is the perfect time to give them a little extra tender loving care. They should be pruned back so that they are not taller than five feet to prevent wind damage. It is also necessary to make sure that they are securely attached to the structure they are climbing. Branches should be cut off that may rub together. Remove any branches that seem to not be thriving by pruning them off at the main branch.

The best time to prune and mulch is after any chances of a hard frost has passed. If Las Vegas gets a late hard freeze, then it may be necessary to prune again. Your landscape design in Las Vegas will look super when you spend time taking care of your roses this spring.
