4 Trees to Consider Adding to Your Desert Landscaping
Fall is the best time to add trees to your desert landscaping. They will add beauty to your yard and help to lower energy bills by providing shade when they are bigger. There are several different varieties that do well in the Las Vegas area.
Sweet Acacia
This medium-size tree has a light and airy vibe to it. The ends of this evergreen tree’s branches swoop down giving it a weepy look. The thorns on this tree mean that homeowners should carefully decide where they want to plant it. In the spring, this tree blooms with bright yellow flowers. It usually matures at about 25 feet and usually is about 13 feet wide. It does well down to temperatures about 12 degrees.
African Sumac
This small-to-medium-size tree has beautiful bark starting out light gray when the tree is young before breaking open to show red hues. Old wood, however, on this tree turns a dark gray. While it is often sold as a single trunk specimen, the multi-trunk specimens are extremely pretty. This tree that has extremely small flowers produces red berries. Therefore, its placement should be carefully considered so that the berries do not drop on concrete. Watering this tree only about a dozen times a year helps to keep it looking airy.
Chaste Tree
Sometimes called monk tree, this tree produces extremely large blue to lavender spikes in the spring, but it may continue to bloom until October. It can be grown either as a large shrub or pruned to make a small tree. This tree can reach heights up to 25 feet with pruning, and it is often as wide as it is tall. It is cold tolerant to 10 degrees, and it does well in sandy desert soil.
Forman’s Eucalyptus
The shaggy wood on this tree will leave people wondering what you have planted because it is a little unusual in the desert. This small eucalyptus tree usually reaches heights of about 16 feet and can reach up to 15 feet wide. While most have a single trunk, like the chaste, this tree is especially pretty when it has multiple trunks.
These trees are beautiful when used in the right locations in desert landscaping in Las Vegas. Consider planting one this fall.
