Three Ways to Monitor the Efficiency of Your Sprinkler System

Watering the turf helps to keep it healthy and vibrant. An automatic sprinkler system for the lawn makes this easy and convenient. Check the Rate of Turf Growth

If you notice that one section of your turf grows much faster than the other sections, there could be a problem with the automatic sprinklers. The rate of turf growth should be consistent across your entire lawn. A sprinkler head leak, puddling of water, or another issue could be the cause of faster growth than you expect.

Measure the Water Penetration

For an ideal rate of growth, plants need water penetration about one-half of an inch deeper than their roots. This promotes a strong, deep root system that helps to keep the plants healthy. Be sure to measure the water penetration in your soil at least once a month. If the water is penetrating too deeply, use less water. If it is not penetrating deeply enough, your turf may need some additional care, such as aeration. Poor water penetration could also mean that the soil has become compacted and some loam, peat, or other materials should be mixed into the thicker organic matter.

Watch for Runoff

If your turf and ornamental plants have not gotten the amount of water they need but there is runoff, consider a delayed start. Shut off the sprinklers for about three hours and start them again to finish the watering cycle. If you discover wet sidewalks or a wet driveway, turn the sprinkler heads so the water is not sprayed onto the concrete or asphalt.
