Stop Rabbits from Destroying Landscaping
The two types of rabbits that are commonly seen in Las Vegas are the jackrabbit and the desert cottontail. Many Las Vegas homeowners struggle with these rabbits destroying their landscaping. If you are one of them, then here are three solutions that you may want to think about to make sure these rabbit vandals do not destroy your property.
Rabbit-proof Fences
It is possible to install rabbit-proof fences around your landscaping but remember if the rabbit can get their head through the opening, then they can squeeze the rest of their body through the opening. Therefore, fences should not have openings any larger than one inch. Additionally, rabbits dig under many fences, so make sure to bury the fence several inches in the ground. All fences should be at least three feet tall to prevent rabbits from jumping over it. Choose a material that rabbits cannot chew up.
Plant Rabbit-resistant Plants
Just like you, rabbits have foods that they prefer to eat. There are many types of shrubs that rabbits do not prefer, but they will eat anything when they are hungry enough. Shrubs that rabbits do not like include butterfly bushes, milkweed, and many varieties of birds of paradise. There are also perennials like zinnias, sage, and lavender that may keep bunnies away. Most rabbits prefer to eat on annuals, but they will usually leave sunflowers, blanket flowers, and tickseed alone.
Rabbit Repellents
While some prefer to use commercial repellents to keep rabbits away, others prefer to use ammonia since rabbits hate the smell. Once a den is located, then ammonia-soaked rags can be placed at the entrance to encourage rabbits to move their dens somewhere else. Some gardeners even place ammonia and rags in cups near plants that rabbits may enjoy eating.
Desert landscaping in Las Vegas requires most homeowners to consider how they are going to keep rabbits at bay. Use these ideas to make sure they do not harm your landscaping.
